Crab Mentality

Yesterday, I was with my friends when one of them opened up a problem about his family. After listening, I really couldn't get over to a notion that such a thing exists within a family. So, I decided to write something about this attitude that has plagued the minds of the Filipinos for years.

Crab mentality, as we know it, can be best described in this situation: In a bucket of live crabs readied to be cooked, one crab attempts to escape while the other crabs pull it back down, rather than allowing it to get free and thereafter, congratulating it for a great escape. In the end, all of them will get boiled and die.

''If I can't have it, neither can you,'' this is practically true to almost everyone. And what makes this very disturbing is that one gains the glory of putting others down to make himself feel better.

Over the years, this mentality has been existing and is continually poisoning the minds of many people. In school, students do this for grades and honors. In businesses, businessmen compete for money. In politics, government officials bark at each other for power and wealth. In relationships, one tends to ruin other's reputation to win the guy/girl he/she seeks love and attention. In show business, uprising stars faces negative issues and polemic scandals. Even at home, crab mentality exists among members for some reasons.

If we take a closer look at it, this mentality is a contributing factor on why our country has gone rotten in the hands of crab-minded people. Consequently, we were left behind by our neighboring countries in terms of progress. In common sense, how can we achieve improvement/developments when we, ourselves are unwilling? If we don't allow someone get out from an unfortunate situation, then most probably, other people might not also want us to get ahead. Isn't it? I guess, we have to think about this one.
